NBCC International (NBCC-I) was founded by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Board of Directors in 2003 to advocate for and collaborate on the development of professional counseling worldwide. The idea of an international division came about to cover the need expressed by counselors all over the world for collaboration on professionalization mechanisms for counseling.

With prestigious allies such as the World Health Organization and UNESCO, and building on already existing relationships with regional and national counseling entities on every continent, NBCC International
aims to spread the availability of competent, reliable services to any part of the world that indicates an interest
in acquiring them, offering a menu of universally accepted principles and templates and then collaborate with regional
and national organizations as they shape their credentialing policies, assessment methods and training requirements to
the needs of their populations.
